Universities and Schools Select DreamCalc as an Alternative to Hand-held Scientific Calculators
Major educational institutions are showing an increasing interest in using DreamCalc as an alternative to hand-held
scientific calculators in the classroom. That is according to Big Angry Dog Ltd, which has just announced that Mississippi
State University is the latest institution to select its DreamCalc software for use in the university's 150 workstation
mathematics lab.
DreamCalc is an alternative to the standard calculator which ships with Microsoft Windows, but is designed to look and
"feel" like a real scientific calculator. Unlike the emulator software typically offered by calculator manufacturers,
DreamCalc is not only intended to be used by math tutors to give demonstrations, but by the students themselves in their studies.
DreamCalc has, in fact, been adopted by Connections Academy(r) LLC for use by students of its accredited distance learning
program since 2006.
Andy Thomas, the author of DreamCalc, explains more about the rationale behind the software: "I created DreamCalc because I
realized that whenever I needed to solve a math problem, I preferred to rummage through my desk to look for a hand-held calculator
rather than simply use the one on my computer. I started to ask myself what it would take for me to actually want to use an
on-screen calculator over a hand-held. I wanted to create something I would almost want to take out of the screen and
use with my hands."
Big Angry Dog has recently begun to offer a range of licensing alternatives to educational establishments. These are intended
to help bring DreamCalc into the classroom by accommodating a range of licensing requirements, from those of a small school,
needing only a few installations, to those of a major multi-campus university.
DreamCalc is available in three editions: a Scientific Edition, a Graphing Edition which offers function and data plotting
capabilities, and a Professional Edition which additionally supports financial calculations. A free trial can be downloaded from
the DreamCalc website at www.DreamCalc.com.
